Your First Session
What to Expect from Your First Session with Mike
If you are feeling a bit nervous about your first personal training session, that is completely normal. Almost every client I have worked with has felt the same way. The good news is that by the time we are done, most people wonder why they waited so long to get started.
Here is a breakdown of what your first session looks like so there are no surprises.
Before You Arrive
There is no need to buy special equipment or get into shape before we start. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, bring a water bottle, and bring a towel if you like. Trainers or gym shoes with a flat, stable sole are ideal, but any clean sports shoes will do for the first session.
I will send you a short health questionnaire beforehand. This covers your medical history, any injuries or conditions, your current activity level, and your goals. Filling this out honestly helps me prepare a safe and effective session for you.
The Consultation
We will begin with a conversation. I want to understand who you are, what you want to achieve, what has or has not worked for you in the past, and what your lifestyle looks like day to day. This is not a test. There are no wrong answers. The more I know, the better I can help you.
Movement Assessment
Next, I will take you through some basic movements — things like squats, lunges, pushing, pulling, and some core work. This is not about how strong you are or how much you can lift. I am looking at how your body moves so I can identify any areas that need attention and build your programme around your individual movement patterns.
A Taster Workout
Depending on how the assessment goes, we will usually finish with a short workout to give you a feel for how our sessions will run. I will coach you through each exercise, explain what we are targeting, and make sure you are comfortable with the movements. The intensity will be appropriate for your level — I am not going to run you into the ground on day one.
After the Session
I will put together your initial training programme based on everything we have covered. You will receive this along with any recommendations for what to work on between our sessions. From here, we build consistency, and the real progress begins.
A Quick Note on Nerves
Every single person who walks through the door for the first time is taking a brave step. I respect that, and my goal is to make you feel welcome, comfortable, and confident from the moment we start. There is no judgement here — only support.
