Setting Your Goals

Getting Started · Beginner · 2026-03-23

Why Goal Setting Matters

Walking into a gym without clear goals is like setting off on a road trip without a destination. You might enjoy the drive for a while, but eventually you will feel lost and frustrated. Setting well-defined goals gives your training direction, helps you measure progress, and keeps you motivated when things get tough.

In my experience working with clients, the people who achieve the most are not necessarily the most talented or gifted. They are the ones who know exactly what they are working towards and why it matters to them.

The SMART Framework

SMART is a tried-and-tested approach to goal setting that works brilliantly for fitness. Each goal you set should be:

Specific. Vague goals produce vague results. Instead of saying "I want to get fitter," try "I want to be able to run 5 kilometres without stopping." The more specific you are, the easier it is to build a plan around your goal.

Measurable. You need to be able to track your progress. Numbers are your friend here. Weight lifted, distance covered, time taken, body measurements — these are all ways to measure whether you are moving in the right direction.

Achievable. Your goal should stretch you, but it needs to be realistic given your current starting point and circumstances. Setting an impossible target only leads to disappointment. We can always set new goals once you hit the first ones.

Relevant. Your goal should matter to you personally. Not to your partner, not to social media, not to anyone else. When your goal connects to something you genuinely care about — playing with your kids without getting out of breath, feeling confident on holiday, staying independent as you age — you will find the drive to keep going.

Time-bound. Give yourself a deadline. Open-ended goals tend to drift. A target date creates urgency and allows us to work backwards to build a realistic training plan.

Examples of SMART Fitness Goals

  • "I want to deadlift 100 kg by September" — specific, measurable, and time-bound.
  • "I want to complete a 10 km run in under 55 minutes within the next 12 weeks."
  • "I want to attend three training sessions per week consistently for the next two months."

Setting Goals Together

When we sit down for your initial consultation, we will spend time talking through what you want to achieve and why. I will help you refine your goals so they are challenging but realistic, and then we will build a programme designed to get you there. Along the way, we will check in regularly, celebrate your wins, and adjust the plan as needed.

Your goals are allowed to evolve. What matters most is that you always have something meaningful to work towards.
